5 Inspiring Movie Mothers

If you’ve got the maternity wear, bought all the diapers and had your final ultra sound, all that’s left to do until the arrival of your new baby is to wait. Or… you could head down to the video store, warm yourself up some popcorn and get yourself in the ‘mummy mood’ with five amazing mum movies.

Now fair warning, some of these are going to be joyous and happy, having you sing along to old favourites, others are going to be tear jerkers, so pull out the tissues and have a good cry. Regardless of which category they fall into, they are inspiring and feature some of the most brilliant movie mums to ever grace the screens. So pull up a blanket, or one of the new plush toys you’ve bought, and then settle in for a tear fest.

1. Little Women

It’s a classic novel turned into a screen play and adapted so many times most can’t even recall all the versions available. No matter which one you choose to watch, you will experience the highs and lows of this family of women as if they were your own. While the girls take centre stage, their mother is the inspiration behind the story, teaching them to give to others, to care for each other and to love. At times a comedy, and others a tear jerker, this is a great start to your mum movie marathon.

2. Step Mom

If it’s Julia Roberts, you know it’s going to be good! She’s young, she’s beautiful and she’s marrying a man who already has two partly grown children. And their mother is dying. And they need to care for her. You couldn’t imagine a more challenging or moving story — grab the tissues and see the story unfold.

3. At the Deep End of the Ocean

Another oldie but a goodie, this movie features Michelle Pfeiffer in a movie about a mother’s resilience. When her tiny son is stolen at an event, and the search reveals nothing, the family has all but given up hope. Until one day, after moving to a new home, mum spots her now twelve year old son mowing lawns. The story unfolds with heart breaking tragedy after tragedy, so get ready to mourn and fight with this inspirational mum.

4. Steel Magnolias

Sally field, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts… need more be said? This is the tear jerker of tear jerkers that follows a group of tightly knit women through the challenges and tragedies that unfold as a mum watches her daughter, grow, marry, and have a child of her own.

5. Juno

Ok so it’s not along the same themes as the other inspirational films, but this teenage mum has some life lessons and lessons about motherhood of her own to teach. This one is definitely a laugh a minute, as the sarcastic teenager survives high school while being pregnant, and seeks out the perfect mum for her baby.
